The call from the sea

At the age of 7, our captain, Diego, met «Ferrán» a small wooden Corsaire sailboat that his family kept in the port of Cambrils (Catalonia, Spain). That was the first time he felt the call of the sea.

Sailing is an extreme experience, it either catches or repels you. In the case of Diego, the sea caught him.

Diego is a restless person, he has many hobbies, including: gliding (flying unpowered aircrafts), diving, canoeing, snowboarding, mountain biking, golf, archery, model building… As a good adventurer, he explores everything that comes his way, yet water is a constant in many forms: windsurfing, Dinghy sailing (classes: Optimist, Stingray, 420, Vaurien and Hobbie Cat) and cruising.

At the age of 33, Diego and two friends bought a small cruising Geisha-class sailboat. With a slightly longer than Ferrán, just 6 m., they sailed on it for more than 10 years by the waters of Mequinenza Reservoir known as the Sea of ​​Aragón or Lake Caspe.

Although he sailed with this boat on weekends, but the call of the sea was stronger and summertime the perfect opportunity for offshore sailing. So, with the title of Pleasure Boat Skipper Licence and destinations like Costa Brava and the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean ran deep. He sailed the deep-and-dark-souled Mediterranean with its red sunrises, as the song says.

After obtaining the title of Yacht Skypper License, and aboard larger boats, he participated in two editions of La Ruta de la Sal, one of the most prestigious regattas in Spain, and with the As de Guía Sailing School in the Regatta “el Gaitero”, the most prestigious regatta in the Bay of Biscay. But the call of the sea remained strong and constant, something was missing, navigating the Ocean Sea. So, in spring of 2015 and aboard the Freya he hopped into the Atlantic crossing. Sailing from the Canary Islands to reach Cape Verde, and then to Trinidad and Tobago. More than 3000 nautical miles overall. An experience that revived the dream of that 7-year-old, who later devoured great sailors´travel books and dreamed about emulating their adventures going around the world in a sailboat.
