In May 1846, because of the blockade imposed by the Carlist armies to Barcelona for «The Revolta dels Mariners», there was a shortage of salt that threatened the city.
A well-known business man from Barcelona had the original idea of calling the most famous sailors of the moment and present a challenge: he would pay services to transport salt from the Salinas Pitiüses (Formentera) to Garrf (Barcelona), but by the order of arrival. The first to arrive would be paid with gold, but the latter may not even could pay the salaries of the sailors.
Thirteen vessels were presented to the challenge. The first to arrive was the «Maltese Falcon», a schooner from Baltimore 32 m. lenght and skippered by Andreas Potrus, followed by jabeque «Jerba» and «Arrogante» Brig.
Since 30 years ago, The Mediterranean Sailors Association (ANAM, Asociación de Navegantes de Altura del Mediterráneo) organizes the prestigious regatta «La Ruta de la Sal» – Trofeo Pepe Ferres, emulating that historical fact.
The Sailing Living Lab will collaborate with ANAM during this regatta, together with other ships with which she will be coordinated. Acrobat and her crew will follow the race and provide support to the organization.
